Howard City Michigan: A Brief History

Founded in 1868 and incorporated as a village in 1873, Howard City was named after William A. Howard, a prominent Detroit railroad attorney. The town’s growth was fueled by the arrival of the Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad, followed by the Detroit, Lansing, and Lake Michigan Railroad, making it a bustling junction for the lumber industry.

While a major fire in 1883 destroyed many of the original wooden buildings on Ensley Street, the community showed its resilience by shifting the main business district to Edgerton Street, which remains the heart of the village today. Howard City was once home to the world’s largest manufacturer of sideboards, the Skinner & Steenman factory, and the famous Olsen Knife Company.
