Discover Pierson: The Gateway to the North

Located in the far northwest corner of Montcalm County, the Village of Pierson and Pierson Township offer a perfect blend of rural tranquility and easy access to West Michigan’s major corridors. Known for its community-focused spirit and its proximity to some of the region’s best hidden lakes, Pierson is a vital piece of the Montcalm puzzle.

A Brief History of Pierson

Pierson was settled in 1856 and saw a boom in 1870 with the arrival of the Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad. Named after Josiah Pierson, who owned much of the early timberland, the village became a major shipping point for lumber and agricultural products.

While much of the early infrastructure was centered around the railroad, the community transitioned into a peaceful residential and farming hub. Today, Pierson is celebrated for its small-town charm and its role as a “bedroom community” for those who love the rural life but work in the surrounding cities.
