Cedar Lake Michigan

Cedar Lake is a lake located just 3.2 miles east of Edmore, in Montcalm County. A place loved by fishermen. The lake has a variety of fish including perch, largemouth bass, bullhead, pickerel, rainbow trout, brown trout, bream/bluegill, smallmouth bass and crappie. Take the family or get a couple friends, grab your favorite rod and reel, and head out to Cedar Lake.

Discover Cedar Lake: History and Curiosities

Located along M-46 just east of Edmore, Cedar Lake is a tranquil unincorporated community in Home Township. While it may be quiet today, Cedar Lake holds some of the most unique historical secrets in all of Montcalm County—from railroad junctions to a world-famous architectural anomaly.

A Brief History of Cedar Lake

Cedar Lake was settled around 1876 and developed as a vital stop on the Pere Marquette Railroad line between Alma and Howard City. Named for the surrounding groves of majestic cedar trees, the community was once a bustling loading point for the region’s active lumber mills.

Perhaps its most famous (and peculiar) claim to fame is the Two-Story Outhouse. Built in the late 19th century, this “double-decker” privy was designed to serve a general store and residence, with a clever offset design that allowed both floors to be used simultaneously. Today, it stands as a restored landmark, drawing “roadside attraction” enthusiasts from across the country.
