Discover Sidney: The Educational Heart of Montcalm County
Located in the geographic center of the county, Sidney is far more than a quiet rural crossroads. As the home of Montcalm Community College, Sidney serves as a beacon of learning, culture, and workforce development for the entire West Michigan region. Surrounded by the rolling farmland of Sidney Township, this community is where the county’s future is built.
A Brief History of Sidney
Sidney was settled in 1854 and officially organized as a township in 1857. Named after Sidney Thomas, an early settler, the area originally thrived on the lumber trade before transitioning into some of the most productive farmland in the county.
The most significant turning point in Sidney’s history came in 1965 with the founding of Montcalm Community College. The college transformed Sidney from a quiet agricultural stop into a bustling campus that attracts students, educators, and visitors from across the state.
