Discover Greenville: The Historic Hub of the Flat River

Greenville is the vibrant heart of Montcalm County. Known as the “Danish Festival City,” it combines a rich industrial legacy—from the legendary “Refrigerator Capital” days to modern manufacturing—with unparalleled natural beauty along the Fred Meijer Flat River Trail.

A Brief History of Greenville

Founded in 1844 by John Green, the city’s growth was driven by the power of the Flat River. In its early years, Greenville was a massive lumbering town, with the river serves as a highway for white pine logs heading toward Grand Rapids.

As the timber era ended, Greenville transformed into a manufacturing powerhouse. It became known as the “Refrigerator Capital of the World,” home to the massive Gibson (and later Electrolux) plant. Today, Greenville is a center for education, healthcare, and retail, while meticulously preserving its Danish heritage and historic downtown architecture.
