Discover Stanton: The Historic County Seat

Located in the exact center of the county, Stanton is the pulse of Montcalm’s civic life. As the County Seat since 1860, it is home to the courthouse, county records, and a storied history of law, order, and community resilience. Beyond the brick and mortar of government, Stanton offers a peaceful residential life and a deep connection to the surrounding agricultural landscape.

A Brief History of Stanton

Stanton was established specifically to be the central hub of Montcalm County. It was named after Edwin M. Stanton, the Secretary of War under Abraham Lincoln. Incorporated as a city in 1881, it quickly became a booming lumber town.

When the timber era ended, Stanton didn’t fade away; it solidified its role as the administrative anchor of the region. Today, the city maintains its historic character, with many 19th-century buildings still standing along Main Street, serving as a reminder of the city’s long-standing importance.
