Discover McBride: The Historic Mill Town of Day Township

Located just six miles northeast of the county seat in Stanton, McBride is a village that preserves the quiet, industrious spirit of Montcalm County’s past. Once a bustling junction for the railroad and timber industries, McBride today offers a peaceful community atmosphere in the heart of Day Township.

A Brief History of McBride

McBride was born from the grit of the lumber boom. In 1874, Alexander B. McBride, a settler from New York, arrived and established a sawmill. When the railroad pushed through in 1877, the stop was naturally called “McBride’s Mill.”

By 1883, the village was officially incorporated, absorbing the nearby settlement of Custer. At its peak, McBride was a critical shipping point for the Pere Marquette Railroad, moving lumber and agricultural goods across the state. While the sawmills are gone, the village remains an essential piece of the Montcalm County story.
