Tony Gates: Rock Radio Stories from Decades Behind the Mic, Sharing Music History, Legendary Artists, and the Community-Driven Spirit of WGLM 106.3 FM.

For decades, Tony Gates has been a trusted voice in rock radio—introducing listeners to unforgettable music, legendary artists, and stories you simply won’t hear anywhere else. In this episode of the Discover Montcalm Podcast, Tony sits down with host Duane Weed and Kara Stevens to share the remarkable journey that shaped his career and why, after years in corporate radio, he’s found a true home at WGLM 106.3 FM in Greenville, Michigan.

Tony Gates raised in a small town

Born Anthony Eugene Gates and raised in the small town of Litchfield in Hillsdale County, Tony’s path into radio began almost by accident at Grand Valley State University. What started as a midnight college radio shift a few years later became a lifelong education in music—digging deep into the heart of rock and roll, and discovering artists organically, one record at a time.

That curiosity opened doors few ever experience. Tony shares stories of driving legends like Frank Zappa, meeting Walter Cronkite, and spending time with icons including Paul McCartney, Bob Seger, George Harrison, and countless others. Rather than chasing celebrity, Tony’s approach was simple: treat artists like people. That authenticity became his trademark and carried him through a career spanning more than three decades on the air.

After 37 years at a major rock station, Tony made a decision many broadcasters never do—he stepped away from corporate radio. What pulled him back? A radio station that reminded him why he fell in love with broadcasting in the first place.

“I had my fill of corporate radio,” Tony explains. “WGLM felt different. The music library was deep, varied, and real.”

Today, Tony hosts weekdays 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. on WGLM 106.3 FM, a locally owned, community-focused station serving Greenville and West Michigan. It’s a place where music matters, local voices are valued, and radio still feels personal.

Jim Aaron owner WGLM brings Tony Gates back to the airways

That commitment hasn’t gone unnoticed. In a November 21, 2025 Daily News article, WGLM Owner and General Manager Jim Aaron put it best:

“Tony’s not just a broadcaster—he’s part of West Michigan’s identity. He has decades of experience, knows the community, and brings a kind of authenticity you simply can’t manufacture. We’re proud he chose us.”

This episode isn’t just about radio history—it’s about community radio done right, the power of music, and why authenticity still matters.
