Discover Trufant: The Stump Fence Capital of the World
Tucked away in Maple Valley Township, Trufant is a village with a character all its own. From its historic “stump fences” to its vibrant Danish roots, Trufant remains one of the most culturally distinct and welcoming communities in Montcalm County. It’s a place where history isn’t just in books—it’s built into the very landscape.
A Brief History of Trufant
Trufant was settled in 1871 by Emory Trufant, who built a sawmill to capitalize on the surrounding pine forests. As the land was cleared of timber, the early Danish settlers faced a challenge: thousands of massive pine stumps left in the ground.
Instead of burning them, these industrious farmers pulled the stumps and tipped them on their sides, root-to-root, to create “Stump Fences.” These natural barriers became a world-famous hallmark of the area, and even today, Trufant is recognized globally for preserving this unique piece of agricultural history.
