Whether you’re here for the dirt track or the water, Crystal offers an energy unlike anywhere else in the county.  Crystal Lake Montcalm

A Brief History of Crystal

Crystal’s story began in 1853 when brothers John and Humphrey Smith, scouting for timber, camped on the shores of Crystal Lake. Legend has it they were so captivated by the clarity of the water that they named the lake on the spot.

In 1857, Enos P. Drake built the town’s first sawmill, and the village quickly became a hub for the lumber industry. However, as the timber faded, the water took center stage. By the early 1900s, Crystal had transitioned into a premier resort destination, with cottages and dance halls lining the shore, a legacy that continues today as a seasonal home for thousands of Michiganders.
