Discover Carson City: The Frontier of Montcalm County
Located at the intersection of M-57 and the southeastern edge of Montcalm County, Carson City is a community that wears its history with pride. From its “Frontier Days” celebrations to its role as a regional healthcare leader, Carson City proves that small-town Michigan has big-city heart.
A Brief History of Carson City
Carson City’s name is a nod to the American West. Platted in 1866, the town was named by Thomas Scott, a settler who had spent time in Carson City, Nevada, during the silver and gold boom. Enamored with the spirit of the West, he brought the name back to Michigan.
The city’s early economy was built on the hum of sawmills and grist mills along Fish Creek, powered by the region’s vast timber resources. While many lumber towns faded, Carson City evolved, becoming a critical junction for agriculture and eventually home to the region’s primary medical facility, now known as Sparrow Carson Hospital.
